Oct 11, 2023 by Mallory Lynn
- The property owner’s signed approval
- A licensed surveyor’s site plan. The document is usually needed for freestanding signs. You can retrieve a copy from the property owner.
- Stamped plans by a licensed engineer. This plan is required by many towns for certain types of signs that are over 6 feet tall.
- A special committee review application (such as planning board or special improvement district)
- A zoning application form
- A building and electrical application form. If the sign is illuminated, electrical approval is needed.
- Your sign’s drawings and schematics provided by Signarama

How to Choose an Electronic Message Center

Features and Advantages of Electronic Message Centers
- Unlimited number of message changes and variable controls result in lower labor cost and the elimination of the physical liabilities often associated with copy changes on traditional reader boards.
- Variable messages as people pass by, allow greater flexibility in communicating to the public.
- Flexibility means your business can advertise specials while also displaying public service information or other items of public interest.
- Electronic Message Center signs can quickly “brand” your business site in the local community.
- Investment in your business and provide the best and most cost-effective forms of paid advertising. The only form of advertising that may be more powerful is word of mouth
- Effectiveness of an Electronic Message Center is not limited by space or surface area constraints as with a reader board.
- Electronic Message Centers act as your “salesman on the street,” attracting new customers to your business location.
- Allow you to market your products and services to your immediate trade area and prevent wasteful advertising expenses.
- Business owners can change the message as needed to provide information to specific retail customers and can be used for political, social, or community events.
- Software is available that enables business owners to display sophisticated logos or images on the Electronic Message Center precisely as planned.
How to Choose an Electronic Message Center
Choosing the right LED display is vital to maximizing the display’s potential. Answer these four questions designed to help to find the display that’s right for your application. 1. Is it an indoor or an outdoor application? LED displays are specifically designed for either indoor or outdoor use. Two main factors determine whether a display can be used indoors or outdoors. The first factor is weather durability Outdoor displays are designed to work in extreme weather conditions while indoor displays are not built to stand up to the same environmental factors. Second, outdoor displays use different LED’s than indoor displays. The LEDs used for outdoor displays are brighter to account for the varying lighting conditions. Indoor displays do not have the same concerns and subsequently are not as bright. 2. What message content is needed? Your communication needs may factor into your decision of which display is right for your application. Evaluate how you plan to use the sign by asking yourself questions like:- Is color needed in the messages or is monochrome sufficient?
- Will the display show graphics as well as text?
- Will the display show video images?
- How many lines of copy will you want displayed at one time?
- What type of messages will be communicated to the intended audience?
Great Things to Keep in Mind for Electronic Message Centers and Digital Signs
There are some good things to keep in mind when creating messages and artwork for your electronic message centers.Character Size
The distance from the sign to the viewers factors into determining the actual physical size of the sign. The farther the viewer is from the sign, the larger the letters need to be in order to be readable. Large letters can mean a larger sign. The general rule of thumb in determining the appropriate size for your sign is you need 1 inch for every 50 feet of viewing distance. For example, if you were traveling at 60 MPH on a freeway, and the sign is 500 feet away at a gas station, the text letters would need to be at least 10 inches tall to be legible. Likewise, if you are standing 100 feet away from a sign at street level, the letters only need to be 2 inches tall to be legible.
Pitch
Longer distances require less resolution, and shorter distances require higher. Resolution, also known as pitch, plays a key role in the cost of your sign. The higher the resolution, the more expensive the sign. Pitch is the distance (usually in millimeters) between pixels. Pitch is always measured from the center of one diode to the center of another diode. The smaller the pitch number, the higher the resolution quality. Larger pitch numbers indicate a lower resolution. A pixel can be one single diode or a pixel can consist of a cluster of diodes running off the same circuit. Certain pitches are better for certain distances. For example, a sign off a freeway that will only be viewed from far away only needs a low resolution because of the distance from which it is being viewed. A sign viewed from street level, such as one in front of a school, would want a higher resolution because it will be viewed from a shorter distance.

Quick Summary: Maximizing Your ROI with Electronic Message Centers (EMCs)
Electronic Message Centers (EMCs) are the "salesmen on the street," providing the most cost-effective form of paid advertising available today. Unlike traditional reader boards, these programmable LED displays allow you to change your message instantly, targeting specific audiences at different times of the day without the labor of manual letter changes.
How to Choose the Right LED Display:
-Indoor vs. Outdoor: Outdoor EMCs are engineered with ultra-bright LEDs to compete with direct sunlight and are built to withstand Colorado's harsh snow and rain.
-Resolution & Pitch: "Pitch" is the distance between pixels. Shorter viewing distances (like a school entrance) require a smaller pitch for higher resolution, while freeway signs can use a larger pitch to save on costs.
-Character Sizing: To ensure legibility, follow the "1 inch for every 50 feet" rule. If your audience is 500 feet away, your text needs to be at least 10 inches tall.
-Content Strategy: Consider if you need full color for complex logos and video, or if a monochrome display is sufficient for text-based community alerts and daily specials.

Jun 16, 2023 by Mallory Lynn
Promote
Promote the event on social media! Look to see if the Event has Social Media hashtags, follow their page and start promoting that you will be there at booth #. You might even consider creating an email drip campaign, 2 or 3 emails to get them excited about seeing you at the booth. You can also tease them with your merch or “behind the scenes” pictures. You might even be able to purchase a list of attendees from the Event organizer and send a targeted email to your guests before evening showing up.Be prepared
We all know you can plan for months or even years for an event, but there are, also, those last-minute events you just find out about or get invited last minute to. Make sure to have an event kit that has all the basics ready to go. A brand tablecloth, a branded canopy tent, a retractable banner with your services or business info, and some branded promotional swag. Even having a branded pop-up backdrop display comes in handy for many events. These types of displays grab a lot of attention and look great for photo opportunities. It always helps to cater your booth and motif to the theme of the event. With a ready-to-go event kit, you will be set to attend any event at a moment's notice.
Consider your audience
You will receive a lot more engagement at an event when you design your booth or stand to the event. For example, a recent event Signarama Brighton attended was superhero themed. So, all our booth attendees wore wonder woman shirts with Signarama Branded capes, and we had teddy bears made with capes and masks. We had pet bandanas with a “not all heroes wear capes” design that became very popular. We threw ourselves into the theme of the event making people more apt to engage with us.
Get creative with your swag
Everyone has pens, notepads, flash drives, chapsticks, and even hand sanitizers. Getting creative with your promotional swag will have people piling into your booth. With a quick search in our promotional product catalog, you will see that there are thousands of options. (Check out our promotional products catalog) It is extremely important to think about your audience, what would be useful to them, what would you be excited to get at an event? Think outside of the box, your giveaways don’t necessarily need to coincide with what you do, you just want them to keep your giveaway so when they have the need for your product or service your promotional product is sitting on their shelf reminding them of who you are.
You can also do a giveaway or raffle and text your customers who won so they come back to your booth a second time. That way you, also, have the opportunity to make a big deal to celebrate them and their prize. Take a picture of them with their prize and tag them on social.
Get active
Make your booth a popular spot by having some sort of activity to drive engagement. Consider having a golf-putting game or a spin-and-win that gets people involved and talking. Offering a prize appeals to the competitive side of people, making them want to dive in. For one event, we purchased a basketball arcade game. People were lining up through the aisle to play one of our team members who had become “hard-to-beat” (and it didn’t hurt that this was right around the NBA playoffs). While people are selecting prizes or waiting in line, make sure your team members are talking to them about your services or products and how your business can benefit them.
Partner
It’s no secret that attending events can get expensive quickly. Between the entrance fee, booth setup, promotional products, raffle prizes, it all adds up. You don’t want to cheap out on your branding because what does that say about your business? But there are other ways you can look at cutting costs. Partner with another franchise or a vendor to share booth space. If you’re a roofing company with a great relationship with a flooring company, join together to create an awesome booth space and split the costs.Follow up
Make the most of your leads. Follow up from the Event and don’t forget to do that shortly afterwards so you are fresh in their minds! You can call them or setup an email campaign to reach out. Sending them industry-related information can really help take your new lead to the next level. Pass along helpful blogs, educational pieces you have created, or direct links to products on your website that are going to be of interest. If you are following up with an email campaign, utilize videos and gifs to attract more attention. This maybe a great time to add a coupon or promotion as well to get your new lead to bite. Tradeshows and events are great ways to attract new clients and customers. However, do not let them die on the vine. Make sure to do your due diligence and follow up with your leads. There is just as much work to do after the event as it took to plan and prepare for the event. So make sure to get the highest ROI out of your experience and push yourself to gain those new relationships. --------- Quick Summary: How to Dominate Your Next Vendor Event Attending a trade show or local event is a major investment. To see a real return on that investment, you need more than just a table; you need a strategy that drives engagement and captures leads. After 17+ years of event marketing, we’ve found that the most successful booths are those that prioritize promotion, preparation, and personality. Pro Tips for a High-Traffic Booth: -Promote Early: Don't wait for the event to start. Use social media hashtags and email campaigns to tell your audience exactly where to find your booth. -The "Ready-to-Go" Kit: Always have a branded event kit—including a custom tablecloth, retractable banners, and a pop-up backdrop—ready for last-minute opportunities. -Embrace the Theme: Increase engagement by tailoring your motif to the event's theme. Whether it's superheroes or seasonal holidays, "leaning in" makes your team approachable and memorable. -Creative Swag & Activities: Move beyond basic pens. Use a promotional products catalog to find unique giveaways, and host activities like a "spin-and-win" or arcade game to keep people in line and talking to your team. -The Fortune is in the Follow-Up: An event is only successful if you follow up. Reach out to your new leads shortly after the event with helpful industry information, educational blogs, or special promotions. Jun 16, 2023 by Dawn Homa
Most graphic designers, most, can generally do a good job. A Great Graphic Designer is worth their weight in gold. They understand colors, what is eye catching, how to generate artwork in various formats and layouts, and (gasp) even have a grasp of math. An important and essential part of graphic design is appropriate sizing and spatial relationships.
The sign has to fit onto the building and the space allowed. Is the marquee going to be large enough to be seen when cars are driving by at 50 mph? Is there enough color contrast so the post and panel is readable from a distance of 100 feet? What colors are easier to read?
The two images above are for a trade show display. Which of the two options do you like better? Then ask yourself… isn’t a professional graphic designer who comes up with unique ideas that catch your attention worth paying for? Don’t sell yourself or your business short with poor designs. Because in business… lunch isn’t free and neither is graphic design.
----------
Quick Summary: The Real Value of Professional Graphic Design
In the world of business, your logo and signage are often your first "handshake" with a customer. While DIY tools and favors from friends are common, professional graphic design is a technical service that involves much more than just drawing an icon. From color theory and spatial math to ensuring your files are production-ready, a great designer ensures your brand looks as good on a building as it does on a screen.
Why Professional Design Isn't "Just a Button":
-Technical Precision: Signs require specific vector formats to stay sharp at large scales. Using low-resolution files from website headers or online business card builders leads to blurry, unprofessional results.
-Math & Visibility: Design for signage involves calculating viewing distances and traffic speeds. A designer ensures your text is legible to a driver going 50 mph.
-Color Contrast: Not all colors work together in the "real world." Designers understand which combinations pop from a distance and which ones disappear into the background.
-Production-Ready Files: Clean artwork saves you money. When files are built correctly from the start, you avoid the "cleanup fees" required to make poor artwork usable for manufacturing. We have a few more questions...

Taking care of your vehicle wrap and graphics is especially important in Colorado where the sun is intense and the temperature can go from 90 degrees during the day to 30 at night . UV rays, heat, dust, smog, road residue, and mag chloride in the winter all contribute to damaging the graphics on your vehicle.

Read moreHow to get the most bang for your buck on your Vehicle Wrap
Apr 28, 2023 by Mallory Lynn
Once you have a solid brand implemented, it is time to look at your vehicle wrap. Here are some guidelines we recommend to help you get the most bang for your buck on your wrap.
Avoid Photographs
Unfortunately, photos quickly get dated and don’t usually scale well to big layouts. A photograph is not a representation of your brand and won’t be as rememberable as your logo and colors. Photographs when used as backgrounds present many challenges with text and wording, making the important information hard to read, if not illegible.
Keep Text Concise
This is when it is time to deploy the K.I.S.S. method (Keep. It. Simple. Stupid.). Your vehicle is a billboard, not a brochure. Limit text to web, phone, logo, and tagline. NO MORE. Avoid bulleted lists, avoid Social Media Handles, and avoid QR codes! Unless you’re a food truck and have a QR code for your menu you really don’t need one on your wrap. Don’t use parenthesis on your phone numbers. This reduces the size and impact of the number and ONLY USE ONE PHONE NUMBER. Any more than one phone number will cause confusion.
Also, even though you legally need “LLC” or “INC” added to your business name for account purposes, it doesn’t legally need to be on your branding. Drop it and utilize the space it will provide to make more important elements larger. You don’t see companies like Apple or Home Depot using their “Apple, Inc.” DBA that you will see on their billing in their branding.
Eagles Don’t Flock with Pigeons
The design of your wrap should stand out from your competitors, not fit in with them. Research your competitors, see what colors and elements they are using and do the opposite. Reduce your design to its most simplistic form. This allows you to create supergraphics that highlight an element of your brand that will catch the attention of your customers, not your competitors.
Stay Obvious
In case I haven’t made it clear yet, keep it simple and obvious. Your moving billboard will be seen in mere seconds. Try to get across one concise simple message. Don’t let imagery (like photographs) take away from the message. Avoid glows, shadows, and outlines as these just muddy the waters.
Considering a Fleet?
If you are considering growing your business to fleet status or are already designing for a fleet, make sure the design will work across multiple types of vehicles. Have a list of types of vehicles that will be in the fleet for optimum design impact.
The most successful vehicle wraps are simple, bold, and can be recognized from a distance. Don’t spend thousands of dollars on your vehicles without evaluating your brand first and work with our team of wrap experts to get the most bang for your buck. Keep track of your incoming phone calls, website, and sales, after you get your vehicle, wraps to see the ROI a great branded wrap will do for your business.
Quick Summary:
Designing a High-ROI Vehicle Wrap
A vehicle wrap is a moving billboard, not a brochure. To get the most "bang for your buck," your design must be rooted in a strong, consistent brand that translates perfectly from your website to the road. If your branding is cluttered or inconsistent, your wrap will fail to convert potential customers.
Pro Tips for an Effective Wrap:
-Brand First, Wrap Second:
Ensure your logo, fonts, and colors are consistent across all platforms before investing in vehicle graphics.
-The K.I.S.S. Method:
Keep it simple! Limit text to your logo, tagline, website, and one phone number. Avoid bulleted lists, social media handles, and distracting QR codes.
-Skip the Photos:
Photographs date quickly and often make text illegible. Stick to bold graphics and brand colors that stand out from a distance.
-Be the Eagle:
Research your competitors and do the opposite. Use unique colors and "supergraphics" to ensure you don't blend in with the crowd.
-Design for Longevity:
If you plan on building a fleet, ensure your design is versatile enough to look great on various vehicle types and sizes.Signs of the Stars Signarama Brighton Open House
