May 1, 2025 by Mallory Lynn
Like boss, like... me? It started with a suspicious email amidst the usual inbox chaos at Signarama Brighton. A "Congratulations on Winning..." notification had me thinking "Spam!" Little did I know, it was the start of a full-circle moment in my sign industry journey, culminating in a truly unexpected honor: the 2025 Women in Signs award. Having nominated my own inspiring boss for this very recognition years ago, the irony and the privilege of now being a recipient are profound.

Navigating the Maze: A Guide to Effective Healthcare Signage
Feb 10, 2025 by Mallory Lynn
Healthcare facilities can be complex places. From sprawling hospitals to busy clinics, clear and intuitive signs are crucial for patients, visitors, and staff to navigate with ease. But effective healthcare signage is more than just pointing people in the right direction. It's about designing a space that is inclusive and easy to use for everyone.
Take a look at these 5 key considerations for designing and choosing signs in the healthcare industry:
1. Accessibility is Paramount
Accessibility is crucial in healthcare signage. All signs must adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, incorporating braille, tactile characters, and accessible font sizes. Visual clarity is essential, achieved through high-contrast colors and simple, easy-to-read fonts, avoiding decorative or overly stylized designs. Think about your audience as well, providing signage in multiple languages as needed. Consulting an expert in ADA signage is key as they will know all the rules and regulations around this type of sign and can design concepts that meet these requirements but also fit into the branding experience.
2. Clarity and Consistency are Essential
Clear, consistent healthcare signs are vital for wayfinding. Simple, jargon-free messaging and a unified design layout—using consistent fonts, colors, and symbols across all signs, from the parking lot to the patient room—ensure easy navigation. Strategic placement is key for visibility and accessibility. Developing a comprehensive wayfinding system can be complex so partnering with an experienced sign company that specializes in wayfinding packages, including (but not limited to) monuments, building signs, traffic and street signs, interior and exterior blade signs, directories, and suite signs, ensure brand consistency and a cohesive system. When working with a sign partner they will help you determine the optimal number and types of signs needed for clear communication throughout your facility.
Why is Effective Directional and Wayfinding Signs so Important in Healthcare?
-Reducing stress and anxiety: Clear wayfinding helps patients and visitors feel more comfortable and in control.
-Improving efficiency: Easy navigation allows staff to focus on patient care, not giving directions.
-Enhancing safety: Properly placed directions guide people safely through the facility, especially during emergencies.
-Creating a positive first impression: Well-designed directions reflect professionalism and care.
-Boosting patient satisfaction: A smooth and stress-free experience contributes to overall satisfaction.
3. Creating a Welcoming Environment
Creating a welcoming environment sets the tone in Healthcare facilities. Signs play a key role in reinforcing brand identity and creating a sense of belonging. This can be achieved through various means, including exterior building signs to establish a strong presence, large-scale wall graphics that add visual interest and branding in lobbies, and dimensional lettering and logos that provide a professional touch. Positive messaging like the facility’s mission statement can promote well-being and community within. Calming colors should be chosen to create a reassuring atmosphere, avoiding bright or jarring hues except in designated children's areas. The incorporation of art and graphics enhances the visual appeal and creates a more welcoming atmosphere as well. Privacy glass, whether frosted or patterned, is a great consideration as well that offers a sense of privacy in sensitive areas while maintaining a bright and open feel.
4. Technology Integration
Using the latest and greatest in technology offers valuable opportunities to enhance wayfinding and communication in healthcare settings. Digital signage should be considered for wayfinding, announcements, and patient information in Electronic Message Centers (EMCs) or digital displays, as it allows for easy updates and real-time information dissemination. Furthermore, exploring ways to integrate signage with mobile technology, such as QR codes or wayfinding apps, can provide additional convenience and accessibility to enhance the patient's experience.
5. Material Matters
Material selection is a critical aspect. Durability is fundamental, as healthcare facilities experience high traffic and require signs that can withstand wear and tear. For example, instead of easily scratched acrylic, wayfinding signs might be made from durable, cleanable materials like aluminum composite material (ACM) or high-pressure laminate (HPL). Ease of maintenance and repair is, also, required. Choosing materials that are simple to clean, like non-porous surfaces for room name signs, and easy to repair or replace, such as modular sign systems, will contribute to the longevity and cost-effectiveness of the sign system.
It’s about creating a positive experience with each sign!
Specific types of signs contribute to the functionality of wayfinding and communication within the facility. Durable floor graphics can guide patients to specific departments, particularly helpful in large facilities. In pediatric areas, using vibrant colors, playful fonts, and child-friendly imagery creates a less intimidating environment. Illuminated signs, such as channel letters, offer excellent visibility at night, while light boxes are versatile for both interior and exterior use, displaying directional information, room names, or other important messages. Successful healthcare signs are a key part of creating a positive experience for everyone in a medical or dental facility. By considering these important factors and working with an established sign partner, healthcare providers can ensure that their sign system is not only impactful but also contributes to an inviting, reassuring, and accessible environment.

2024 Longest Standing Project – National Western Stock Show
In December 2023, Signarama Brighton had the distinct honor of participating in the topping-out ceremony for the new National Western Center Livestock Center. This momentous occasion, held on December 5th, marked a significant milestone in the construction of this remarkable facility. Dawn Homa, Owner, and Dae Stiefvater, Project Coordinator, were privileged to sign the final beam, a symbol of our commitment to this project.
We are beyond grateful for the opportunity to contribute to such a prestigious undertaking. Throughout 2024, we have been diligently collaborating with general contractors, meticulously refining every sign detail. This journey has undoubtedly been rigorous and demanding, with numerous unforeseen challenges. However, we have persevered, tirelessly iterating through designs and eagerly anticipating final approval for our current version.
With an impressive count of over 700 signs, we are brimming with excitement to start fabrication and showcase our expertise in large-scale sign installations. We are confident that our work will contribute significantly to the atmosphere and functionality of the National Western Center Livestock Center.

2024 “Shock & Awe” Moment – Brighton Chamber Gala
The Brighton Chamber of Commerce Gala was a delightful evening filled with laughter, camaraderie, and a touch of friendly competition! We had a blast designing fun signs for the Casino Night theme, capturing memorable moments in the photo booth, and even getting a little messy with cake – a mishap that turned into a hilarious anecdote!
The dessert auction was a highlight of the night. You were told to have your top 3 desserts picked out and to choose a runner from your table. Our top choice was the mouthwatering chocolate cheesecake. Well, Mallory was our valiant runner, and she almost got that cheesecake, but I was left stunned by her strong hold grab for this cake. We still didn't get the cheesecake but ended up with our 2nd choice – decadent frosted cookies and Mallory with a hand covered in cheesecake.
The entire evening was a blast, and we thoroughly enjoyed the company of our fellow chamber members. Although my video mainly focused on capturing the chaos of the dessert auction, you can find a link to the full video *HERE*

Dec 2, 2024 by Dawn Homa and Mallory Lynn
Why the Reluctance to Admit We Use AI?
There’s a persistent myth that effort equals authenticity. Some people believe hours of grinding away on a blog, story, or presentation is more “legit” than finishing the same topic in minutes. But let’s be real: the true value lies in the outcome, not the effort. AI isn’t here to replace creativity—it’s here to amplify it. Using AI is like having a brainstorming buddy who never gets tired or runs out of ideas. And while the occasional glitch might leave you scratching your head, the benefits far outweigh the hiccups. Sharing your AI wins and fails fosters collaboration and inspires others to dive in, not to mention a few laughs. Because let’s face it: nothing breaks the ice like swapping stories of AI’s funniest missteps. We’ve outlined some of the things we learned from using AI. Admittedly, we’ve made mistakes... But then, that’s the fun part of AI.How to Speak Fluent AI: A Hilarious Guide to Prompt Perfection
In the world of AI, one thing is certain: it listens better than your dog but doesn’t fetch the paper (yet). Whether you’re dabbling with ChatGPT, exploring Gemini, or testing out Bard, there’s a universal truth about AI—what you ask is what you get. And sometimes, what you get is...well, unintentionally hilarious. What Is an AI Prompt?
An AI prompt is essentially a set of instructions you give your digital assistant. Think of it like texting your smartest, most nonjudgmental friend—one who doesn’t roll their eyes when you ask them for the fiftieth time how to spell “unprecedented.” But here’s the catch: this friend is clueless without context. It’s your job to spell things out clearly, or you might end up with results straight out of a surrealist painting. These days, everyone uses AI—even if they won’t admit it. From whipping up blog posts to choosing tonight’s dinner (yes, there’s a recipe generator for that), AI has become the coworker who works 24/7. But do you know how to talk to your AI coworker?Types of AI Prompts
When it comes to prompts, simplicity is key. Think of it like decluttering your closet—ditch the fluff and focus on your main objective. Too many side quests will derail your digital assistant faster than you can say, “Oops.” Start small, build trust, and let the magic unfold. Here are four common types of AI prompts: 1. Direct Commands: “Write me a blog about AI prompts.” Clear, concise, and to the point—just the way AI likes it. 2. Open-Ended Questions: “What do you think of pineapple on pizza?” (Spoiler: It has no personal opinion, but it can give you a gourmet-level debate on the subject.) 3. Creative Challenges: “Write me a Shakespearean sonnet about tacos.” Because why not? AI loves to flex its creative muscles. 4. Problem Solvers: “Explain quantum physics to a fifth grader.” Fun fact: AI is surprisingly good at simplifying the universe’s biggest mysteries. How to Make a Good AI Prompt
A good AI prompt is like a GPS. Be vague, and you’ll end up lost in the middle of nowhere. Be specific, and you’ll arrive at your destination in record time. Here’s your roadmap: The Equation for Prompt Perfection: (Identity + Audience + Specific Details + Output) = AI Delivered Objective x Feedback = AI Gold 1. Give Your AI an Identity - Want a blog? Ask it to “write as a witty marketer.” Need legalese? Summon its “inner lawyer.” By assigning a perspective, you help your AI craft a message that truly resonates with your audience. 2. Be Specific - “Write me a blog” is like asking your chef to “cook something.” Sure, they will, but you might end up with spaghetti when you wanted sushi. Specify tone, length, style, and key points. Use clear adjectives like “creative,” “humorous,” “professional,” or “casual” to refine your request. 3. Define Your Audience - Are you speaking to Gen Z , TikTokers, corporate executives, or your grandma’s knitting circle? Each group craves a unique flavor, and AI is a master at tailoring content to the right audience. 4. Define the Output - Blog? Social media caption? Love letter? (We don’t judge.) The more clearly you define the format, the better the results. 5. Give Feedback - AI is like an eager intern—it improves with constructive criticism. If the output feels off, say so! Ask it to “make it snappier,” “add more personality,” or “throw in some dad jokes.” It’ll listen better than your real intern, guaranteed. When Prompts Go Wrong
Ah, the AI bloopers. Ever asked for a “professional portrait of a dog” and ended up with a five-legged pup?
While in a team meeting, we had a discussion about a project. It was mentioned that it felt like a “log jam of people” to make a decision. Afterward, two different team members asked AI to make an image of a “log jam of people”
Below are the two results. As you can see how you ask AI to create something will affect the outcome. So don’t be afraid to ask again in a different way to get the result you want.
Refining Your Prompt Skills
Prompting is a skill—and like any skill, it gets better with practice. The beauty of AI is that it learns you as much as you learn it. With time, you’ll build a rapport, just like with any other team member. Here’s how to level up: - Experiment with prompts and phrasing. - Ask for multiple drafts or variations. - Stay curious—AI loves creative challenges. - Don’t be afraid of drafts. Often we will take what AI composes, copy it into a word document, make our own edits, and ask AI to “enhance” once more.Embrace the AI Partnership
In the end, AI is a tool—a brilliant, occasionally quirky tool—that’s here to help us dream bigger, work smarter, and laugh along the way. So the next time you sit down to write something, remember: the perfect prompt is just the beginning of your AI-powered adventure. And with any adventure... It starts with your first step or with AI your first prompt.“Can You Match This Color?”
