“Can You Match This Color?”

Dec 2, 2024 by Dawn Homa

This seemingly simple question can potentially create a whirlwind in our shop. Yes, we have incredibly talented graphic designers, cutting-edge printers, and advanced tools designed for color matching. So why does this straightforward request often make me grimace while our designers momentarily seek refuge behind their computer screens? The Art and Challenge of Color Matching Color matching is not just a science—it’s an art that requires patience, expertise, and a keen eye. When there’s a specific Pantone color involved, we can typically replicate it accurately on our wide-format printers. But more often than not, we’re handed a color sample without exact specifications, which means we need to manually manipulate and test the color to achieve the desired match. This process involves multiple rounds of printing and adjusting, each iteration consuming both time and resources. And while time means money, color matching is rarely an expense people anticipate or want to pay extra for. Materials matter, another factor complicating color matching is the material on which the color is printed. Colors appear differently depending on the substrate. For example, cotton fabric tends to make colors look more muted and glossy banners can enhance vibrancy to create a completely different effect. Print the same “red” on two different materials, and you might end up with two completely distinct shades. Lighting further complicates things. Indoors and under fluorescent lighting, colors can take on a yellowish hue. Outside, in natural sunlight, those same colors may appear washed out with bright light. Add a laminate overlay for durability, and the color may shift once again. “But I Just Want Red” The request for “red” is deceptively simple. There are countless variations of every color—reds, blues, blacks, grays—you name it. We often joke that we could create a “50 Shades of [Insert Color]” chart to showcase the spectrum of possibilities. Take a look at a red color Swatch chart, for instance. Every single option is technically red, but which one looks like the true red to you? That perception depends on individual preference, material, and lighting conditions. So the next time you ask, “Can you match this color?” and you see us pause or give you a thoughtful look, you’ll understand why.
