Monument Signs in NH: Shapes, Lighting, and Finishes That Fit the Site

Oct 8, 2026 by Signarama Concord

A monument sign is often the first thing a customer sees when they pull into a plaza, office park, or medical campus. Unlike a wall sign, it stands on its own at the edge of the property, readable from the road and durable enough for New Hampshire weather. At Signarama Concord, we design and build monument signs for single businesses and multi-tenant properties across Concord and the surrounding area. Most projects start with one of three forms. The standard rectangular monument is the workhorse: a clean cabinet or panel set on a base, easy to brand and easy to update. When a site calls for something less boxy, we build monuments with angled tops or angled sides so the sign follows the architecture of the building or the slope of the lot. Blade-style monuments are a third option. These are narrower and taller, set so the face reads along the driveway or road, which works well where frontage is tight or traffic approaches from the side. How the sign is finished depends on the brand and how often the message will change. A painted monument gives a solid, architectural look that can be matched to building colors. Tenant panels are the practical choice for shopping centers and professional parks: individual faces that can be swapped when a suite turns over, without rebuilding the whole sign. Vinyl lettering and full vinyl wraps cover logos, addresses, and graphics on flat faces, and they are a straightforward way to refresh a sign without replacing the structure. For more depth, aluminum or acrylic dimensional letters can be added as embellishment, either flush to the face or raised so they catch light and shadow. Standoff halo-lit letters go a step further. Mounted off the surface, they glow from behind and read clearly after dark without lighting the entire cabinet. Lighting is planned with the same site in mind. Internally lit monuments use back-lit polycarbonate panels, which is especially useful for tenant directories that need to stay readable at dusk. Externally lit monuments use ground spots or overhead fixtures aimed at the face, a good fit when the design is more architectural and the copy does not need to glow on its own. Either approach can be combined with dimensional or halo letters so the business name stays the focal point. Installation is as important as the cabinet. Most of our monuments are mounted to concrete footings sized for the sign, the soil, and local wind load. The base can be left as formed concrete or finished with faux stone or brick so it ties into the landscaping and the building. Some monument types can be mounted directly at grade, with the concrete set below the surface so the sign appears to rise out of the ground. We review footing, electrical, and permit needs before fabrication so the install matches what the town and the property owner expect. A monument sign has to do three jobs at once: identify the property, hold up in the weather, and leave room for tenants or branding to change. Rectangular, angled, and blade layouts, painted faces, tenant panels, vinyl, dimensional letters, halo lighting, and internal or external illumination all exist so the sign can be matched to the site instead of the other way around. If you are planning a new monument or replacing one that no longer fits the property, Signarama Concord can walk the site, sketch the options, and build the sign.
