We recently had the incredible honor of contributing to a powerful mural project for the City of Sarasota — a tribute to two of the city's earliest Black settlers, Reverend Lewis and Irene Colson. This stunning mural, created entirely with spray paint by the talented Swirly Painter, beautifully honors the Colsons and their lasting impact on Sarasota’s history. Our part in this project was designing and installing an interpretive plaque to accompany the mural. The plaque helps tell the story behind the artwork — and more importantly, the legacy of the Colsons, who helped pioneer the Overtown neighborhood, now known as the Rosemary District. In 1899, they also founded Bethlehem Baptist Church, the area’s first African American church — a lasting spiritual and cultural cornerstone for the community. To play even a small role in preserving and sharing this kind of legacy is why we love what we do. It’s not just about signs — it’s about honoring history, supporting public art, and helping stories like this continue to inspire. We’re deeply grateful to the City of Sarasota for the opportunity to be part of such a significant project.
