What Is an ADA Compliant Restroom Sign?

An ADA compliant restroom sign is a permanent room-identification sign that meets the accessibility rules in the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. To comply, it must carry tactile (raised) characters paired with Grade 2 Braille, use a non-glare finish with high contrast between the characters and background, and, for accessible restrooms, include the International Symbol of Accessibility. It also has to be mounted in a specific location and height beside the door.

These rules apply to restrooms in public accommodations, commercial facilities, and government buildings. Getting any one element wrong, the contrast, the Braille, or the mounting height, can make a sign non-compliant, which is why restroom signage is usually produced by a sign company that builds to the ADA specifications. Signarama produces ADA and engraved signs built to these requirements.

What makes a restroom sign ADA compliant

A compliant restroom sign has to satisfy several requirements together, not just one.

  • Tactile raised characters, in a sans-serif font, so they can be read by touch.

  • Grade 2 Braille positioned directly below the tactile characters.

  • A pictogram where used, including the International Symbol of Accessibility for accessible restrooms.

  • High contrast (light characters on a dark field or the reverse) and a non-glare finish.

  • Correct mounting location and height beside the door.

Tactile characters and Braille

Permanent rooms like restrooms require characters that can be read by touch: raised at least 1/32 inch, in a simple sans-serif typeface, in uppercase. Grade 2 Braille sits just below the text. This is what separates a room-identification sign from a directional sign, which does not require tactile text.

Contrast, finish, and pictograms

The characters and their background must contrast sharply, either light on dark or dark on light, and the surface must be non-glare so the sign is readable to people with low vision. Where a pictogram is used, accessible restrooms carry the International Symbol of Accessibility, and the symbol sits in its own field above the tactile text.

Mounting height and location

Placement is part of compliance. A restroom sign mounts on the latch side of the door, and the tactile characters sit between 48 and 60 inches above the floor so they can be reached and read by touch. Signs are placed so a person can approach and touch them without the door swinging into them.

Which restrooms need an ADA sign

ADA room-identification signs are required for permanent restrooms in facilities open to the public or used by employees.

  • Every public restroom in an accessible building needs a compliant sign.

  • Single-user and multi-user restrooms both require tactile, Braille identification.

  • Directional restroom signs with arrows do not need tactile text, but the sign at the door does.

Common ADA restroom sign mistakes

Most compliance failures come down to a few avoidable errors.

  • Mounting at the wrong height, or on the door instead of the latch-side wall.

  • Low contrast, or a glossy finish that is hard to read.

  • Missing or incorrectly positioned Braille.

  • Decorative or italic fonts instead of a simple sans-serif.

Restroom sign size and lettering

ADA restroom signs also have rules for the characters themselves. Tactile letters must be raised at least 1/32 inch, stand between 5/8 inch and 2 inches tall, and use a simple sans-serif typeface in all uppercase, with Grade 2 Braille below them. Following these keeps the sign readable by touch and keeps it compliant.

Getting compliant restroom signage

Restroom signs are one part of a building's accessibility signage, alongside other room IDs and braille signage. Requirements can also be affected by state and local codes, so it is worth confirming the specifics for your location. Signarama builds ADA and engraved signs to the federal standard and can advise on a full compliant set for your facility.
