Illuminated Motel 6 Lightbox Sign Face in Old Saybrook, CT

A recognizable entrance sign is especially important when a hotel opens under a new national brand. Guests arriving during the day or late at night need to identify the property quickly and feel confident that they have reached the correct entrance. Signarama Newington produced and installed a new illuminated lightbox sign face for the Motel 6 in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Positioned directly above the main entrance, the finished sign displays Motel 6’s familiar blue, white and red identity inside the existing wall-mounted cabinet. Updating an Existing Lightbox for the New Motel 6 This project focused on replacing the sign face rather than unnecessarily replacing the entire cabinet. Reusing a suitable existing lightbox can be an efficient way to update a commercial property when a hotel, restaurant or retail location changes ownership or branding. The new face had to be accurately sized for the cabinet so it would fit securely within the existing frame. Measurements are particularly important for replacement faces because even a small dimensional difference can create installation problems, uneven borders or gaps around the sign. Once fitted into the cabinet, the face transforms the existing structure into clear identification for the new Motel 6. Brand Colors That Perform Under Illumination An illuminated sign face needs to look correct under two very different conditions. During daylight, the printed colors and graphics must remain bold and recognizable. After dark, the internal lighting must pass through the face evenly so the sign can be seen without the colors becoming faded or washed out. The Motel 6 design uses a vivid blue background with the white “motel” lettering and oversized red number six. A white outline around the numeral creates separation from the blue and helps preserve the familiar appearance of the brand when the cabinet is illuminated. Producing graphics for a lighted cabinet requires materials and color treatments intended for backlit signage. An ordinary opaque print would block too much light, while an unsuitable translucent graphic might change appearance once illuminated. The completed face maintains the strong color contrast associated with Motel 6 and remains easy to recognize from the parking area. Clear Hotel Identification Above the Entrance The sign cabinet is mounted on the brick wall directly above the entrance doors. This placement creates a direct visual connection between the hotel name and the point where guests enter the building. For a lodging property, entrance identification serves an important practical purpose. Travelers may arrive after sunset, in poor weather or after spending hours on the road. A bright, uncomplicated sign helps them locate the lobby without having to search around the property. The horizontal proportions of the lightbox also fit naturally above the doorway. Its silver frame provides a clean border around the branded face, while the dark entrance doors below add contrast to the surrounding brick exterior. Replacement Sign Faces for Rebranded Properties A change in hotel branding often affects more than one sign. Existing cabinets, roadside signs and directional displays must be evaluated to determine which components can be reused and which require replacement. When an existing cabinet remains structurally suitable, installing a newly produced face can refresh the property while avoiding the cost and disruption of replacing the entire sign system. The new face must still be developed around the cabinet’s actual dimensions, retainer depth, lighting system and installation conditions. This approach can also apply to shopping centers, gas stations, restaurants, medical offices and other businesses moving into locations with existing illuminated signage.
