Signs for Lake County Businesses — Your Questions Answered

Signs for Lake County Businesses — Your Questions Answered

Jul 13, 2026 by

We've been making signs for businesses across Lake County, Illinois since 2008. Over the years, we've heard the same questions from new customers, returning clients, and people who've never worked with a professional sign company before. Here's everything you need to know — from how the process works to what things cost to whether we handle permits. If you don't see your question here, just call us at (847) 543-4870. We're happy to talk it through.

About Signarama Grayslake

Q: Who is Signarama Grayslake?

Signarama Grayslake is a locally owned and operated sign company based in Grayslake, Illinois. We've been part of the Signarama franchise system since 2008, which means we bring the resources and capabilities of a global sign network with the service and accountability of a local business. Our owner, Nonna Kofman, has been personally involved in every aspect of the business since day one. We're at 888 E. Belvidere Rd., Suite 408, Grayslake, IL 60030.

Q: What makes you different from other sign companies in the area?

A few things. First, we're a true one-stop shop — design, fabrication, permitting, and installation all happen through us, so you don't manage multiple vendors or chase down timelines. Second, we start every project with a conversation about your goals, not a quote sheet — because the right sign depends on understanding what you're trying to accomplish. Third, we've been doing this for 17+ years in Lake County. We know the permitting requirements, we know the suppliers, and we know how to build signs that hold up in Illinois weather.

Q: What areas do you serve?

Our home base is Grayslake, and we serve the full Chicagoland area with a focus on Lake County and the surrounding communities. This includes Mundelein, Round Lake, Round Lake Beach, Lake Villa, Gurnee, Lindenhurst, Libertyville, Antioch, Fox Lake, Wauconda, McHenry, Waukegan, Lake Forest, North Chicago, Ingleside, and more. We go where the job is — distance is not a barrier for our installation crews.

Services & Capabilities

Q: What types of signs do you make?

Just about everything. Our capabilities include exterior signs (channel letters, monument signs, lightbox signs, post and panel signs, aluminum and vinyl building signs), interior signs (ADA signage, lobby signs, wall graphics, wayfinding, floor decals, acrylic signs), vehicle graphics (commercial vehicle wraps, truck graphics, car graphics, vehicle magnets, boat lettering), banners and temporary signs (vinyl and fabric banners, yard signs, event signs, coroplast), and specialty items (trade show displays, digital displays, real estate signs, logo mats, manufacturing and lean signs, reclaimed wood décor signs, and more). If it's a sign, we can probably make it.

Q: Do you do vehicle wraps?

Yes — vehicle wraps are one of our most popular services. We do full wraps, partial wraps, and vinyl lettering for all types of commercial vehicles: vans, trucks, SUVs, trailers, and even boats. We also handle fleet programs for businesses with multiple vehicles. Vehicle graphics are one of the highest-ROI marketing investments a service business can make — your vehicle is seen by hundreds of people every day.

Q: Do you handle ADA signage?

Yes. ADA-compliant signage is a core part of our offering. We produce tactile (raised) lettering, Braille, room identification signs, restroom signs, directional signs, and wayfinding systems that meet ADA standards. We work with businesses, medical facilities, schools, property managers, and government organizations on ADA compliance — and we make sure the signage looks professional, not like an afterthought.

Q: Can you make signs for trade shows and events?

Absolutely. We produce retractable banner stands, pop-up displays, fabric backdrops, table covers, hanging signs, and full trade show booth packages. We also do event signage — registration tables, directional signs, sponsor recognition, and stage backdrops. If you have an upcoming show or event, let us know the timeline early — complex displays benefit from a few weeks of lead time.

Q: Do you make signs for construction sites and real estate?

Yes. We regularly work with contractors, developers, and real estate professionals on site signs, project boards, branded fencing panels, temporary directional signs, A-frames, and yard signs. We understand that construction signage often has short timelines and needs to be durable in outdoor conditions — we plan for both.

Process & Timeline

Q: How does the process work?

We like to start with a conversation — either by phone, in person at our Grayslake shop, or at your location. We gather information about your goals, your space, your brand, and your timeline. From there, we develop a design, share a proof for your approval, fabricate the sign in our production facility, handle any required permits, and then install. We keep you informed at each step and don't move forward without your sign-off. Most projects follow this path: consultation → design proof → approval → production → installation.

Q: How long does it take to get a sign made?

It depends on the type and complexity of the project. Simple vinyl banners or window graphics can often be turned around in just a few days. Standard illuminated signs typically take two to four weeks. Complex projects — large monument signs, full building rebrands, trade show systems — may take four to eight weeks or more. Projects that require permits add time for the approval process, which varies by municipality. We always give you a realistic timeline upfront, and we communicate proactively if anything changes.

Q: What do you need from me to get started?

Usually just a conversation. If you have logos, brand guidelines, or photos of the space, those help us move faster — but they're not required to start talking. We can work with you at any stage: from scratch with nothing but an idea, or from an established brand with exact specs. The more context you give us upfront, the more accurate the initial proposal will be.

Permits & Regulations

Q: Do I need a permit for my sign?

Most exterior signs require a permit from your municipality — including building-mounted signs, monument signs, freestanding signs, and illuminated signs. Interior signs and temporary signage like banners generally do not require permits, though there are exceptions. Sign codes vary significantly between cities and villages in Lake County, and they govern things like size, height, illumination, and setbacks. We are familiar with the requirements across our service area and will let you know what's needed for your specific project.

Q: Do you handle permit applications?

Yes — permit procurement is part of our service. We prepare the required documentation, submit applications to the appropriate municipality, and manage the approval process. We've done this across Lake County and the surrounding area, so we know what each municipality expects and how to avoid common delays. We'll keep you informed of the permit status throughout the process.

Pricing & Estimates

Q: How much does a sign cost?

Sign pricing varies significantly depending on the type, size, materials, complexity, and whether installation is included. A simple vinyl banner might start around $100-200. A standard illuminated channel letter sign for a storefront can range from $4,000 to $10,000 or more depending on size and configuration. Vehicle wraps typically start at $4,000+ for a full wrap on a standard van. Monument signs vary even more widely based on materials and size. We give you an itemized quote based on your actual project — we don't believe in ballpark numbers that set wrong expectations.

Q: Is there a minimum order?

We have a shop minimum, and we do take on projects of all sizes. A single yard sign is just as welcome as a full facility rebrand. That said, some of our production processes have practical minimums — for example, vehicle wraps require a full-vehicle design whether you order one wrap or ten. We'll be upfront about any cost considerations for smaller orders.

Q: Do you offer any warranties or guarantees?

Yes. Our products are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship. Warranty terms vary by product type — outdoor illuminated signs, for example, carry different warranty terms than vinyl banners. We use high-quality materials from established manufacturers, and our installation team stands behind its work. If something is not right, we make it right.

Other Common Questions

Q: Can you match my existing brand colors and fonts?

Yes — brand consistency is something we take seriously. If you have brand guidelines, logos, or existing signage you want to match, share them with us and we'll work to them precisely. We can match Pantone colors, CMYK values, and specific hex codes. If your existing signs are faded or inconsistent, we can also help you re-establish a consistent standard going forward.

Q: Do you work with landlords or property managers on sign approval?

Yes, this is very common. Many commercial leases require landlord or property management approval before exterior signs are installed. We can provide design renderings and specifications in whatever format your landlord requires, and we communicate directly with property managers when that's helpful. Getting sign approval early in the process avoids delays — mention it to us on the first call.

Q: Can you replace or update an existing sign without replacing the whole thing?

Often, yes. We can replace sign faces, update vinyl on existing cabinets, retrofit LED lighting into older illuminated signs, and refresh the graphics on existing structures. Updating an existing sign is often more cost-effective than full replacement. We'll assess what you have and give you honest options.

Q: How do I get started?

Call us at (847) 543-4870, email us, or stop by our Grayslake location at 888 E. Belvidere Rd., Suite 408. You can also reach us through the contact form on our website. We typically respond to all inquiries within one business day. We'll start with a quick conversation about your project and go from there. 7 Essential Tips for Designing Eye-Catching Building Signs That Attract Customers

7 Essential Tips for Designing Eye-Catching Building Signs That Attract Customers

May 6, 2025 by Nonna Kofman

In today’s competitive marketplace, the right building signs can make all the difference in attracting customers to your business. Think of your sign as the first handshake with potential clients—it needs to be warm, inviting, and memorable. Designing eye-catching building signs isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about conveying your brand message effectively and creating a lasting impression. From choosing bold colors to selecting the perfect materials, every element counts in reeling in foot traffic. In this article, we’ll share seven essential tips that will guide you in crafting compelling signs that not only stand out but also resonate with your audience. Whether you're a small business owner or looking to revamp your storefront, these strategies will help elevate your presence and ultimately boost your customer engagement. Let’s dive in and discover how to transform your building signs into powerful marketing tools!

The Importance of Building Signs for Businesses

Building signs are more than just markers for a business location; they are powerful marketing tools that communicate your brand identity to passersby. In a bustling cityscape or a serene suburban area, a well-designed sign can significantly influence first impressions. It’s the visual handshake that can draw in potential customers, making them curious about what lies inside your establishment. The right sign can create a sense of trust and professionalism, crucial for converting a passerby into a paying customer.

Moreover, building signs serve as silent salespeople working around the clock. Unlike other forms of advertising that have a limited duration or reach, signs are constantly visible, making them a cost-effective investment. They work day and night, rain or shine, ensuring that your business is always on display. This constant visibility helps in building brand recognition and recall, which is essential in a competitive market where consumers are bombarded with information from all directions.

In addition, a well-crafted sign can differentiate your business from competitors. It can highlight what makes your brand unique, whether it’s through innovative design, clever messaging, or the use of distinctive materials. By standing out, you not only attract more foot traffic but also position your business as a leader in your industry. Therefore, investing in a high-quality building sign is not just about aesthetics; it's a strategic move to enhance your business's visibility and reputation.

Understanding Your Target Audience

Before diving into the design process, it’s crucial to understand who your target audience is. Knowing the demographics, preferences, and behaviors of your potential customers will guide you in creating a sign that resonates with them. For instance, a sign that appeals to young, trendy consumers will look vastly different from one targeting middle-aged professionals. Conducting market research or analyzing your existing customer base can provide valuable insights into what kind of design elements will attract your desired audience.

Understanding your audience also involves considering the context in which they will encounter your sign. Are they driving by at high speeds, walking leisurely, or perhaps even cycling? The environment and the viewing distance will influence design choices such as font size, color contrast, and the amount of information that should be displayed. A sign that is easily readable from a distance might need larger fonts and simpler graphics, whereas one meant for pedestrian traffic can afford to be more detailed.

Moreover, cultural and regional factors can play a significant role in how your sign is perceived. Colors, symbols, and even certain words can have different connotations in different cultures. Ensuring that your sign is culturally appropriate and resonates with local sensibilities can enhance its effectiveness. By aligning your sign design with the expectations and preferences of your target audience, you increase the likelihood of attracting and retaining customers.

Choosing the Right Materials for Durability and Appeal

The choice of materials for your building sign is critical not only for aesthetic appeal but also for durability. The materials you select will determine how well your sign withstands weather conditions, wear and tear, and the passage of time. For instance, materials like acrylic, aluminum, and PVC are popular for their durability and versatility. They can be molded into various shapes and are resistant to elements like sunlight and rain, ensuring that your sign remains vibrant and intact for years.

Beyond durability, the material also contributes to the overall look and feel of your sign. A polished metal sign can give a sleek, modern appearance, ideal for high-end businesses. On the other hand, wooden signs can evoke a rustic, charming vibe suitable for cafes or boutique shops. The texture, finish, and color of the material should align with your brand’s identity and the message you want to convey. Investing in high-quality materials might have a higher upfront cost but will save you money in the long run by reducing maintenance and replacement needs.

Additionally, it's important to consider the environmental impact of the materials you choose. Opting for eco-friendly materials not only helps in reducing your carbon footprint but also appeals to environmentally conscious consumers. Many businesses are now exploring sustainable options like recycled metals or biodegradable plastics. By choosing materials that reflect your commitment to sustainability, you can enhance your brand image and attract a more diverse customer base.

The Role of Colors in Sign Design

Color plays a pivotal role in sign design, influencing both aesthetics and functionality. The right color scheme can make your sign stand out and grab attention, while the wrong choice can render it virtually invisible. Colors evoke emotions and can significantly impact how your brand is perceived. For example, blue often conveys trust and professionalism, making it a popular choice for corporate signs. Red, on the other hand, is associated with urgency and excitement, ideal for businesses looking to create a sense of energy and dynamism.

When selecting colors, it’s important to consider both contrast and harmony. High-contrast color combinations, such as black and white or yellow and black, improve readability from a distance and in various lighting conditions. This is particularly important for exterior signs that need to be visible during the day and night. At the same time, the colors should harmonize with your brand’s existing color palette to maintain consistency and reinforce brand identity.

Another aspect to consider is the psychological impact of colors on your target audience. Different colors can evoke different feelings and behaviors. For instance, green is often associated with health and tranquility, making it a good choice for businesses in the wellness industry. Purple is linked to luxury and creativity, suitable for high-end or artistic brands. By understanding the psychological effects of colors, you can create a sign that not only attracts attention but also resonates emotionally with your audience.

Typography: Selecting Fonts That Enhance Readability

Typography is a critical element in sign design, as it directly affects readability and the overall aesthetic of your sign. The font you choose should align with your brand’s personality while being easy to read from a distance. Serif fonts, with their traditional and formal appearance, are often used by businesses that want to convey a sense of heritage and reliability. Sans-serif fonts, on the other hand, provide a modern and clean look, making them suitable for contemporary brands.

Readability should be your top priority when selecting a font. Complex or overly decorative fonts can be difficult to read, especially from a distance or at high speeds. Stick to clear, legible fonts that can be easily read at a glance. Additionally, consider the size and spacing of your text. Larger fonts with adequate spacing between letters and lines improve readability and ensure that your message is conveyed effectively.

It’s also important to limit the number of different fonts used in your sign. Using too many fonts can create a cluttered and confusing look, detracting from the overall impact of your sign. A good rule of thumb is to stick to one or two complementary fonts to maintain a cohesive and professional appearance. By carefully selecting fonts that enhance readability and align with your brand, you can create a sign that communicates your message clearly and effectively.

Incorporating Branding Elements into Your Signage

Incorporating branding elements into your signage is essential for creating a cohesive and recognizable brand image. Your sign should reflect your brand’s identity through the use of logos, color schemes, and taglines. Consistency is key; the visual elements on your sign should match those used in your other marketing materials, such as your website, business cards, and social media profiles. This helps in building brand recognition and reinforces your brand message.

One effective way to incorporate branding elements is by prominently displaying your logo. Your logo is a visual representation of your brand and should be instantly recognizable. Ensure that your logo is high-resolution and appropriately sized for your sign to maintain clarity and impact. Additionally, consider the placement of your logo on the sign to maximize visibility and draw attention to your brand.

Incorporating taglines or slogans can also enhance your signage by providing additional context about your business. A well-crafted tagline can communicate your brand’s values, mission, or unique selling proposition in a concise and memorable way. Make sure that the tagline is readable and complements the overall design of the sign. By integrating key branding elements, you create a unified and compelling visual identity that resonates with your audience.

Strategic Placement: Maximizing Visibility and Impact

The placement of your building sign is just as important as its design. Even the most eye-catching sign will be ineffective if it’s not strategically positioned for maximum visibility. Start by considering the primary vantage points from which potential customers will view your sign. This could be from the street, sidewalk, or even from a distance. Ensuring that your sign is placed in a location where it is easily visible to your target audience is crucial for attracting attention.

Height and angle are also important factors in sign placement. A sign that is too high or too low may be overlooked. Position your sign at eye level or slightly above to ensure it catches the viewer’s attention. Additionally, consider the angle at which your sign is viewed. Signs that are perpendicular to the line of sight are more likely to be noticed than those that are parallel. Adjusting the angle can significantly improve visibility, especially for signs placed on busy streets.

Lighting is another critical aspect of sign placement. Proper illumination can enhance the visibility of your sign, making it stand out even in low-light conditions. Consider using backlighting, spotlights, or LED lights to highlight your sign. This not only improves visibility but also adds a dynamic element to your signage, making it more attractive and engaging. By strategically placing your sign and optimizing its visibility, you can maximize its impact and draw more customers to your business.

Compliance with Local Signage Regulations

When designing and installing building signs, it’s essential to comply with local signage regulations. These regulations vary by location and can include restrictions on size, height, illumination, and placement. Failing to adhere to these regulations can result in fines, removal of the sign, or other legal issues. To avoid these problems, research the specific signage codes and permits required in your area before starting the design process.

Consulting with local authorities or a signage professional can help you navigate the regulatory landscape. They can provide guidance on the necessary permits and approvals, ensuring that your sign meets all legal requirements. Additionally, they can offer insights into any restrictions that may impact your design choices, such as limitations on certain colors or materials. Staying informed about local regulations can save you time, money, and potential legal complications.

Compliance is not just about avoiding penalties; it also demonstrates your commitment to being a responsible business owner. Adhering to local regulations shows that you respect the community and are willing to follow the rules. This can enhance your reputation and build trust with local customers. By ensuring that your building sign complies with all relevant regulations, you can create a professional and legally sound signage solution.

Maintenance Tips for Keeping Your Signs Looking Fresh

Maintaining the appearance of your building sign is crucial for ensuring its effectiveness and longevity. Regular maintenance not only preserves the aesthetic appeal of your sign but also extends its lifespan. One of the most important aspects of sign maintenance is cleaning. Depending on the material, signs can accumulate dirt, dust, and grime over time. Regular cleaning with appropriate cleaning agents can keep your sign looking vibrant and attractive.

In addition to cleaning, it’s essential to inspect your sign for any damage or wear and tear. Look for cracks, fading, or loose components that may need repair or replacement. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent further damage and avoid costly replacements. For illuminated signs, regularly check the lighting components to ensure they are functioning correctly. Replacing burnt-out bulbs or malfunctioning LEDs can maintain the visibility and impact of your sign.

Weather conditions can also affect the condition of your sign. Exposure to sunlight, rain, wind, and temperature fluctuations can cause materials to degrade over time. Using weather-resistant materials and protective coatings can help mitigate these effects. Additionally, consider seasonal maintenance to address specific challenges, such as snow or extreme heat. By implementing a proactive maintenance plan, you can keep your building sign looking fresh and effective for years to come.

Conclusion: Transforming Your Building Sign into a Customer Magnet

In conclusion, designing an eye-catching building sign that attracts customers involves a combination of strategic planning, creative design, and practical considerations. Understanding your target audience and choosing the right materials are foundational steps that set the stage for a successful sign. The use of colors and typography, along with the incorporation of branding elements, enhances the visual appeal and readability of your sign. Strategic placement and compliance with local regulations ensure that your sign is visible, impactful, and legally sound.

Regular maintenance is the final piece of the puzzle, ensuring that your sign remains attractive and functional over time. By following these seven essential tips, you can create a building sign that not only stands out but also effectively communicates your brand message and attracts customers. Whether you’re a small business owner or looking to revamp your storefront, investing in a high-quality building sign is a powerful way to elevate your presence and boost customer engagement.

Your building sign is more than just a marker for your location; it’s a powerful marketing tool that can transform passersby into loyal customers. By paying attention to every detail, from design to placement to maintenance, you can create a sign that truly stands out in the competitive marketplace. Embrace the power of effective signage and watch as your business attracts more foot traffic, builds brand recognition, and ultimately grows its customer base.

Wall graphics and LED sign for an inviting community space.

We love customer collaborations! When Fierce Church shared their vision and designs for a gathering area inside their church, we knew we could make it happen. It was a two-phase process. First, we printed and installed the wall mural that forms the background for the sign. The wall mural is made from woven polyester fabric designed to last and remove easily, if and when needed. The custom faux neon LED sign is a safe and economical alternative to real signs made of blown glass, plus it draws very little electrical power. The LED neon sign is the perfect touch, creating an inviting space to draw people together.

This project started with a simple question: "Do you do this?" US Shelter Homes needed new display boards to showcase their updated materials and exterior trim options for their new multi-unit home construction site. Our response? An emphatic "Yes, we do!" Because at the end of the day, displays and point-of-sale graphics are just another form of signage. Point-of-sale signage is crucial for guiding customers through the purchasing process. And when it comes to such a monumental decision like buying a home, it's even more important. US Shelter Homes wanted their customers to truly experience the quality and durability of their materials, ensuring that their home-buying decision was well-informed.
