A Lesson in Value: Why Buying Local Matters More Than You Think

Nov 29, 2025 by Yav Boziloff

I had a client about a year ago—good-sized project, something we invested a lot of time into. We spent almost two months preparing everything: drawings, materials, scheduling, logistics. When it finally came time to move forward, he backed out because he expected the cost to be half of what I quoted. Not ideal, but it happens. Fast-forward almost a year later. I'm driving by and notice the signs installed on his building. I stopped to take a look—curiosity, mostly, and a little professional pride in seeing how another shop approached it. He happened to walk outside and saw me. Luckily, he didn’t recognize me. I complimented the signs and casually asked what he paid for them. What he told me? Almost exactly the same price I quoted. When I got home, I looked up the UL number on the sign and the company that fabricated it. The manufacturer registered to that UL number wasn’t local—not even close. It was a China-based company, and the U.S. location tied to the registration wasn’t the kind of place you’d expect proper UL-listed electric signs to be made. And that’s the real lesson. Sure, maybe I could’ve negotiated more. But the bigger point is this: When you spend your money locally, it stays in the community. It supports real jobs. Real businesses. Real families. In economics, it’s called the local multiplier effect—every dollar you spend with a local business circulates through your community 3–7 times. It pays wages, rent, local contractors… and those dollars come back around to support other businesses, schools, parks, and services in your own backyard. Buying signs isn't just a transaction. It's an investment—in quality, accountability, and the community you live in. So the moral of the story? Buy local. Support the people who support your community. And remember—true value isn’t always in the lowest number; it’s in who stands behind the work.
