A light box face is the translucent front panel of an illuminated sign cabinet — the part where your graphics, logo, and messaging are displayed. When light shines through from behind, your branding pops with brilliant, even illumination day and night.
Materials & Graphics
The three most common face materials are acrylic (affordable, excellent light transmission), polycarbonate (more impact-resistant — great for Colorado hail and wind), and flex faces (translucent vinyl stretched over the frame, ideal for large pylon or monument signs).
Graphics are either printed directly onto the panel with UV-stable inks, or applied as backlit vinyl — which makes future rebranding easy without replacing the whole face.
When to Replace Your Face
Watch for these signs that it's time for a new panel:
• Yellowing or discoloration from UV exposure
• Cracking or crazing from temperature stress or age
• Faded, peeling, or outdated graphics
• Uneven illumination across the sign face
In most cases the cabinet is still sound — replacing just the face saves significant money over a full sign replacement.
Consider an LED Retrofit at the Same Time
A face replacement is the perfect opportunity to upgrade from fluorescent to LED lighting inside the cabinet. LED retrofits cut energy costs by up to 70%, last far longer, and produce more even, vibrant illumination. Pair a new face with an LED retrofit and a 10-year-old sign can look brand new.
