Every day, a call for help is shared on social media sites and crowdfunding pages as a way to draw attention to causes. Most of the pleas we see online stay within the poster’s network, leaving them without the exposure needed in order to make an impact.

While there is a huge value in sharing stories online and asking your network for help, you cast a wider net when you step away from the computer and look to your community for help. One man, Al Ziccarelli did just that! After his wife learned that she would need to have a kidney transplant and was going to be placed on the waitlist for a donor, Al became creative with a sense of urgency. According to the American Kidney Fund, the average wait time on the list is 5 years. In October of 2018, Al reached out to Signarama to share his story which included asking the community for help.

Signs of Hope

At Signarama Bolingbrook/Romeoville, Illinois, Al ordered vinyl lettering for the back window of his family SUV and yard signs that read “Wife Needs a Kidney. Donor Needed.” along with his phone number. Al had heard of others that had used these tools successfully.

The team at Signarama Bolingbrook/Romeoville was happy to help Al spread his message throughout the community. And as it turns out, the community wanted to help Al too. After only a few weeks of posting the yard signs and driving the signs around his community, Al reached out to the team at Signarama with some good news! The signs had captured the attention of three potential donors - all strangers who reached out to Al as a result of his signs.
