Whenever we work on a new project for our client, such as a rebranding, we'll visit the building, take stock of what needs to be done, and plan accordingly. We'll take pictures of all the different signs, including the wayfinding signs, and coordinate production with the client and the Signarama team.
We recently worked with our large client on the rebranding of one of their senior facilities, creating 450 new wayfinding signs for the building. It had been in redevelopment for a year and a half. During that time, they re-carpeted the entire building, and repainted the walls. In most cases, the Signarama installers could just install a brand new sign on a newly-painted wall. But in some cases, the painters had painted around the existing signs, which meant recreating the signs would be a challenge, but not too difficult. We just made signs that were a little bigger than the original unpainted spot, in order to cover up the "holes" in the paint.
We started working in October 2014, and I got to working photographing each and every sign. From there, we were able to formulate a plan and create the signs in our Signarama shop. We finished at the end of 2014.
Most of the wayfinding signs were removed, although a few were left hanging in the facilities. As someone who was unfamiliar with the facility and directions, I was able to figure out how to find the best sign options to provide the clearest directions. We figured if I could find my way, then anyone, from visitors to residents to longtime employees, could find their way too. So we did things like placing wayfinding signs near elevators, and arrows pointing people in the right direction of their chosen rooms.
With our system, our customer was able to get exactly the signs they needed, and they were very happy with the result.
