They're simple messages, which means they need simple designs. Nothing fancy, nothing flashy. These aren't business signs announcing your weekly special or billboards you need to read at 70 mph. Golf signs have some of their own design factors to consider, factors that many other types of signs don't even need.
First, let's talk about color. With oceans of green grass, green trees, and blue skies, green or blue golf signs are going to be lost. Use a contrasting background color to stand out. A vibrant red will command attention, and a vivid yellow will always command attention (until you start playing in the fall). But white is the best background color to use, because it will always show up regardless of the weather (unless you're playing in Minnesota in January).
Many of the golf signs we make are for charity golf events. In these events, we recommend matching the colors of the signs to the sponsors' logos. This not only grabs attention, but also increases brand awareness for the sponsor. If necessary, use a white background and put the sponsor's logo on it to pop.
When adding text to the golf signs, we recommend staying as clear and concise as possible. For one thing, use a sans serif font (it means "without serif"). It's easier to read as a headline. Next, include the least amount of information possible. Skip addresses, websites, and phone numbers, and just use company names only.
Recently, we created some parking signs for the Ann Arbor Regional Chamber, which used the Chamber's logo as the largest feature along with "All Parking Here." Nothing else. When attendees look for a place to park, they will look for a directional sign, and when they find that sign, they will see the Ann Arbor Regional Chamber's logo.
This kind of design thinking goes into golf signs: keep it short and simple, and people will be able to easily understand them.
