In honor of Women\'s Day 2020, we would like to take a closer look at some of the women that continuously add value to the Signarama team as franchisees. As a brand, Signarama is committed to women in business as we understand the challenges that many women face even in our modern world. Female franchise owners are a big part of what makes Signarama a solid, successful business organization. Their valuable contributions are the essence of Signarama’s mission. In honor of Women’s History Month, we would like to highlight the following women as small business owners with unique outlooks on how to best serve small business customers.

Kathy Evert, owner of Signarama Ankeny, IA, shared that she acquired an existing Signarama in 2016. She started with 2 employees and now has a total of 9 employees at Signarama Ankeny. Evert explained, “We are located in the Des Moines metropolitan area and specifically in the suburb of Ankeny, one of the fastest-growing cities in the country.” Based on her experience, she said, “I would encourage anyone considering starting a business to consider a franchise. The support of the corporate office and the network of other owners is invaluable; I cannot imagine being in the sign industry without the support of the Signarama franchise family.” When asked about what has inspired her success, Evert shared, “There are a few things I would say inspire my drive to have a successful business; first are all the business owners I know or have known, and those that have been mentors of mine. I have known some very successful business owners and hope that I can be a part of their league someday. Second, are my employees. I want to provide them a good place to work, a good job, a place they can grow, and be proud of their role in the business’s success. I have a great team in place and am very proud to know and be working with them. Third would be my own competitive and goal-oriented nature. It’s just in my blood!” We know it is, Kathy and everyone at Signarama loves you for it.

Maggie Harlow, owner of Signarama Downtown Louisville, KY, told us recently that they currently have about 30 employees and have built their reputation on having a “full-service product line, ‘white glove’ project management services as well as competitively priced quick turn products like yard signs and banners.” Harlow also shared, “My relationships with my clients are the most rewarding aspect of this business. Often, I find women who want to make an impact get sidelined in corporations or even small businesses. If you feel unseen or overlooked at your job, you will LOVE the seismic shift of being IN CHARGE.” When asked about advice she would share with other women in business, she said, “Put 100% in. Take risks. Be excellent in your word and deed. Those are the things that will make you successful in business.” And we, honestly, couldn’t agree more.

Dawn Homa, owner of Signarama Brighton, CO, recently told us a little about her business, “We are in our 14th year and have 7 employees. We have customers primarily in Colorado but do have clients that have offices in other states. Our focus has primarily been on Medical/Dental, K-12, Restaurants and Commercial/Industrial.” After so many years of running her own business, we had to ask her for tips she would share with other women looking to own their own business, she said, “You wear so many hats and it can be overwhelming. But in the end . . . it’s you. No one is going to work as hard and as long as you will. Develop a strong network of people that you can learn from. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.” Wise words, Dawn. We also asked her about the rewards of owning a Signarama franchise location and she shared, “Meeting and getting to know the other owners. They have helped us learn new tricks, tips, and techniques to build signs. Most are willing to discuss pricing and how they cost projects. This industry is always changing with new products, materials, and ideas. Each owner seems to have their specialty. I also, enjoy the expos as this is a great venue to bring your staff and let them meet people and see the industry.”
One of the things we heard again and again from these women was that even as hard as it can be to own your own business, the rewards are far greater. We also found it interesting that they all felt it was important to connect with other Signarama owners as part of the learning and growth of their business. As the famous John Donne said, “No man is an island.” One of the greatest benefits of owning a franchise is, without a doubt, the network of supportive people that you gain immediately. We look forward to many years of successful Signarama ownership for these women and the many others at Signarama.
