It has to do with the care you put into them. My Signarama colleagues have discussed on this blog how to maintain your vehicle wrap — wash them weekly, store them out of the weather whenever possible, fix small tears and holes — and this still holds true. Admittedly it's a little more difficult to keep your car washed when it's minus-20 degrees, but you're also not kicking up a lot of dirt and dust either.
The other issue is the chemicals used to keep roads free of ice and snow. That can have a harmful effect on your car's finish anyway, so when you've had a tough winter, it's important to keep your vehicle wrap as clean as you can. If you have a car wash that operates over the winter, run it through once every week or two. The chemicals can slowly eat away at the vinyl otherwise.
The other thing to watch out for are holes and tears in the vinyl. With a small tear, it's possible to get dirt and grime trapped under the vinyl, which will not only cause it to deteriorate and peel, but that small piece of grit will act like a piece of sandpaper over the months and years, and eventually wear through your car's clear coat finish, which will cause rust on the body. We'll patch small holes in your vehicle wrap to avoid this problem.
The biggest challenge we face is putting on a vehicle wrap when it gets cold. We need a minimum of 50 – 60 degrees to apply the vinyl, so we need to keep our installation bay warm. On a really cold day, that's easier said than done, so we may have to wait until the outside temperature isn't so low.
These issues are true for any part of the country, regardless of climate. Keep your car clean, keep chemicals off the vinyl, watch out for holes and tears, and make sure it's warm enough to apply the wrap. If you can solve these problems, you can have a vehicle wrap in any part of the world.
